MISSION :

Despite it being a revolutionary online file sharing service for over 10 years, less than 27% of the population is aware of what BitTorrent. We were challenged to raise awareness and change the perception towards BitTorrent as a platform that lets people connect and engage with art, music, and culture. Our idea was to create a collaboration between BitTorrent and popular electronic music band ‘Cut Copy', that aimed to reinvent the way a song and music video could be released with the help from an online file sharing platform. We developed a concept for the first 3D-printed music video and released every frame of animation as an open-source download for fans to be able to 3D-print their own figurines, handing the keys and files over to the public.

EXECUTION :

We designed over 200 custom figurines in Cinema4D and printed the figurines with UV reactive filament. The figurines were shot frame by frame as stop-motion under black lights and the film was released through BitTorrent along with every 3D file. We handed over the files, storyboards, 3D-printing instructions and music to the fans. The story spread through the media and creative communities with millions downloading the files. The design approached defined a new way to create animation as CG and export frames into a 3D-printing format, allowing stop-motion to be created and shared through an entirely new approach.

RESULT :

The song became a tangible object that the fans could own. Not only did we invent a new process of filmmaking with 3D-printing, but we also redefined how musicians can engage with their fans. The video for “We Are Explorers” was showcased on hundreds of news outlets. In less than one month, the BitTorrent Bundle saw 8.8 million impressions. More than 2.6 million 3D print Bundles were downloaded, making it the most downloaded 3D-printing files in history. 29% of the people who came to the bundle installed BitTorrent, and Cut Copy saw a 50% increase in ticket and album sales.
